SMS Ushers in Innovative Leadership Model, Embracing Classical Education

Saint Mary School in Middletown is taking a bold step forward, introducing a new leadership model designed to enhance its commitment to Catholic Classical Liberal Arts Education. This exciting change will see experienced educator Jeffrey Johnson stepping into the role of headmaster, while current principal Craig Palmer transitions to president, effective July 1st.

This unique structure, uncommon in Catholic elementary schools, aims to provide increased oversight and drive innovation. Rev. Jeffrey Kegley, Director of Saint Mary School, emphasizes that this dual leadership will allow for a more responsive and resilient school community. Johnson, with his background in theology and educational leadership, brings a passion for classical education, which prioritizes intellectual depth, spiritual formation, and critical thinking.

“Catholic Classical Liberal Arts Education feels so natural to me,” Johnson explains. “Teaching at the high school level, I saw that critical thinking skills aren’t well developed in many students. This model provides a foundation for students to process information critically, while also encouraging them to really engage with and feel wonder in their environment.”

As headmaster, Johnson will focus on day-to-day operations, curriculum implementation, and community partnerships. Meanwhile, President Palmer will concentrate on long-term vision, school culture, academic planning, and fundraising. Johnson's vision includes strengthening church-school partnerships, boosting enrollment, and fostering strong parent-guardian relationships.

This new leadership model underscores Saint Mary’s dedication to providing a holistic education that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit. With Johnson's expertise and the school's commitment to classical education, Saint Mary is poised to provide an even more enriching experience for its students.
