Important Information: Solar Eclipse April 8

On the day we return to school following spring recess, there will be an awesome astronomical event: a total solar eclipse. While this is an awe-inspiring event, our number one priority is the safety of our students and staff.

The event is set to take place between 2:10 and 4:36 pm with the peak set for 3:25 pm. We have put some proactive plans in place as it is a safety risk to look directly into the sun during this time. Here are the measures the SMS is taking:

  • We will have outdoor recess and PE classes if able due to the timing of the eclipse.

  • We will not have emergency/fire drills.

  • Our students will be escorted to the buses and parking lots at dismissal time with reminders to not look at sun during passage to vehicles.

  • A suggestion is being made for students to wear a hat with a bill to help shield the sun during dismissal.

  • All afterschool activities will be canceled so all students can be at home during the highest exposure level at 3:25 pm.
